To all of you wonderful mothers, mother figures, and inspiring women... we thank you. Happy Mother's Day from all of us to all of you.
Happy Sunday, everyone!
Saving Country Music just gave us "Two guns up," and you can check out the review HERE! Thanks for the kind words! We're thrilled!
Just a quick reminder about our May 10th show at The Garage in Winston-Salem, NC. I'll be opening up solo around 9:00 PM, the Bluff will be hitting the stage immediately after, and Winston's the bo-stevens will be finishing off the evening in style. You'll defninetly get your money's worth of honky tonk and sad songs, I promise you.
Thanks for all the wonderful support! We hope to see you all out and about soon!
PS- May the 4th be with you. :D
Hey there all you lovely people, you!
I hope you've shined up your boots and grabbed your summer hats... because we have some fun North Carolina shows coming up!
May 9th, John performs solo at King's in Raleigh with The Cousins so if you're in town, be sure to check it out! He's first up, so show up early and stay late, amigos. Tell your boss you'll be in around lunch time and you'll be glad to bring him a biscuit, hashbrowns, and a coffee on your way in. :D Works every time!
May 10th, The Rosewood Bluff returns to my old stomping ground (all those years at the North Carolina School of the Arts!) and one of our favorite cities, Winston-Salem. We'll be at The Garage and we hope to see some familiar faces out and about! The weather has been beautiful lately, and it's wonderful to play The Garage this time of year. I'll be opening up solo with my country/folk originals in between Loretta Lynn and Mike Nesmith songs. The Rosewood Bluff will be hitting the stage afterwards with a new tune and I hear rumors of a new Byrds cover. Maybe Mr. Howie will bring out his fancy new 12 string? Who knows what'll happen! The bo-stevens will be sending you all home with their brand of old-school honky tonk and all the hometown heartbreak you can handle. It's a night of friends, so it'll be one not to miss. I'll be selling the new record to help you get your Rosewood Bluff fix when I'm not on the stage doing double double bass duty.
And another praiseful nod from NoDepression.com!!! "It's honky-tonk as all get out, full of twang and tension, peppered with pedal steel and hosted by a voice that sounds like it just unfurled itself from the toes of Ernest Tubb's muddy cowboy boots... Golub's pedal steel is right up there with country's finest pedlars Buddy Emmons and Ralph Mooney. Feather and Hartman sound like they're married, locked together in conjugal, rhythmic bliss, while Shearer shreds the twang into delicious slivers." DANG! High praise! Thanks all!
We are so happy you guys are loving the record as much as we enjoyed making it. We couldn't have done it without all of you lovely, wonderful fans.

Wow. What a CD Release show! Thank you to all who came out, Magnolia Collective for sharing the stage with us, and for The Cave for hosting. There are few things in life that are as wonderful as sharing an evening with people you love doing the thing you love the most. To all of our friends, family, and fans... we simply cannot thank you enough. To top it all off? John got his wish of nothing but Byrds songs all night long. :)
There's a lot of positive press coming our way about the new album! We are so happy to hear so many people are enjoying it!!!
The Americana Music Show had some kind words for us that you can read HERE.
The INDY had some kind things to say about our CD Release show and how we "Turned the Cave Into a Rainforest". Our friend Dan took some great video footage of us, so be sure to check it out as well as his other videos of local artists!
No Depression.com gave us the thumbs up, and you can check out John's interview HERE.
And... as a special treat for Record Store Day, John recently wrote a piece on Bruce Springsteen's release. Check it HERE!

PS- If you need a little convincing... :D
"In her piece "15 Reasons to Love John Howie Jr." for Outlaw Magazine, writer Billye Merrill had this to say about John and theh Rosewoosd Bluff's 2014 release, "Everything Except Goodbye": "If you are a new fan, you are in store for a variety of tracks like you are not hearing elsewhere. John and his band have mixed up a high-lonesome, country-rockin’ cocktail that will quench your musical thirst. If you are already a believer in John’s music, two words: NEXT. LEVEL." This, ladies and gentlemen, is soulful honky tonk and country-rock for the 21st century, honed to perfection by a crack band that has shared the stage with everyone from Junior Brown and Dale Watson to the late George Jones."
The wonderful people over at Camel City Dispatch gave us a wonderful review of our set at Cash Bash 2014 in Winston-Salem! I'd love to describe the night for you all, but they say it much better than I could! Thanks to all that came out! We had a BLAST.
Catch you all soon! (And with the NEW CD!!!)
Bassist Billie here!
Hope you all are doing well and survived the winter weather. We have a couple of exciting announcements from the Rosewood Bluff camp! Tim Shearer's new little bundle of joy arrived yesterday (weeks early and perfectly healthy!) and her name is Annie. :D She clearly couldn't wait any longer to see the world and we welcome her into the Rosewood Bluff family!
The new CD was sent off to the printers this week, and it will be arriving shortly. We are beyond thrilled at how it turned out. We're going to get them all out to our Kickstarter supporters first, and then we'll have them available at shows! We are super proud as to how the album turned out and we cannot wait to hear what you all think. Skillet at Crawlspace Press did the front cover, and our own Nathan Golub did the layout and artistic direction. I included the picture above to give y'all a little tease... the CD features some of my photography from when I visited Clarksdale, Mississippi!
We are dedicating the album to our dear friend and drummer Matt Brown, to whom John wrote one of my favorite songs called "Blue" in his memory. John mentioned the song title and a few lyrics to me around the time I was going to Clarksdale to work on a recording project. I saw the sign pictured above and luckily had my camera nearby... the rest is history.
The CD release party will be at The Cave in Chapel Hill, and it's going to be a helluvah party! It will be Saturday, April 12, 2014 with our dear friends from The Magnolia Collective. Come on out and help us celebrate our release!
Can't wait till April?! That's okay. We've got you covered! Put on your best cowboy boots and head on over to The Garage in Winston-Salem, NC on February 28th-March 1st for Cash Bash 2014. We'll be there on Friday, the 28th! Word of advice? Get your tickets in advance... the show tends to sell out and you really don't want to miss it. We've got some fun tricks/Cash covers up our sleeves!
In March, John will be doing a few solo shows - so keep an eye on the "Shows" page for those. Catching John in this setting is quite the intimate sonic treat for all you songwriting fans.
In the mood for something completely different? Come check out John and my's (cow)punk rock alter egos in the P-90's with The Bleeding Hearts at The Cave this Saturday, February 22nd. $5, 10PM. We don't do it often, so it's bound to be an adventure!
Whew! That's it for now. Want us to come to your town? Shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll see what we can do for ya!
Until next time!
Hey there Bluff fans!
Wow! What a weekend.
Elvis Fest in Chapel Hill on Friday gave us a chance to show off our best lip curl and rhinestones. Nothing like a little Kentucky Rain, Marie's The Name, or Suspicious Minds to get into the spirit of things. It was good to see some familar faces and some brand new ones. Thanks to Richard Boyd of the bo-stevens for singing "The Streets Of Bakersfield" and with us and Crispy Bess for sitting in on accordian!
Saturday we loaded up the band van and headed off to The Iota Club in Arlington, VA to share the evening with The Highballers for their CD Release show. WHAT A BLAST! We had a packed house when we walked onto stage, and were so thrilled to see some of our good friends out there that we hadn't seen in a long while. I can't even begin to tell you how happy that show made us. Thanks everyone for coming out to see us!
What's up next, you wonder?
The wait is almost over! The CD artwork is finally finished, so we're onward to pressing! Which means we should have the physical CD done shortly and we'll let you all know as soon as we can about our CD release show.
If you all have any video or photos of our shows, please feel free to send them our way! We'd love to put them up on our blog and share them with other fans.
Rosewood Bluff fans, you are truly amazing people and we're lucky to have you along for the ride.
Yours in Music,
